Mites Beat Winnetka 2-1

After finishing a very successful regular season with a 7-5-2 record, the Barrington Redwings Silver Mite A team earned a well deserved third place finish.  That brought the team a first round home game with the Warriors from Winnetka, a very improved and tough team to play.

The much anticipated matchup started with a frantic pace as each team rushed back and forth with several scoring chances by both sides.  The Redwings came out a little sluggish as the Warriors seemed to have the advantage in first period.  As usual, the Wings tough D stymied  several of their opportunities with tough playing by John Crossin, Lane Hutson, Tyler Jackson and Brad Speichenger.  However, the opponent finally got on the board with a nice little end to end rush by one of their 'bigger' players, as he finshed with a goal that ended up in the upper left hand corner of the net for the 1-0 lead which is how the period ended.

The second period was more evenly matched as the continued fast pace featured a lot of scrappy work by both sides as scoring opportunites seemed to even out.  The Redwings had a couple of power plays but were unable to capitalize despite some nice passes by Tommy Shore, Isac Martins and Kevin Speith.  The period ended with the score that remained 1-0 in favor of the bad guys.

After an inspirational speech by Coach Steve Martins, the third period was dominated by the Redwings as the boys won more of the battles along the boards, played better positional hockey and started playing as a team.  Centers Kamren Wood and Robert Schmitt started the period with a couple a nice plays as they moved down the ice with wingers Casey Dardanes and Quinn Rowley making plays that took the wind out of the sails of what appeared to be a frustrated Warrior team.  Right winger Tommy O'Neill opened the scoring for the Redwings by taking the puck along the left boards, beat a Warrior to the right, faked left and the shifted to the right as he went in for a shot that ended up sliding though the five hole of the baffled goalie.  Nice move Tommy, that was sweet!  After several more scoring chances by the Redwings, the Warriors seemed to lose steam and the good guys started to put on more pressure.  As the game started to draw to a close, Defenseman Brad Speichenger weaved coast to coast, faking out any defender that tried to stop him.  Brad passed over the blue line on the left side, looked for a pass, faked out another denfender, skated to the right side using his body to protect the puck and rammed home the winner past the once again puzzled goalie.  Awesome Brad, now thats the way to do it!!  The boys then finished the game for the win with some more of their tough defense and spectacular goalkeeping by Calvin Speith

Next game is this coming Saturday in Orland Park at 3:10 pm against the Northbrook Bluehawks, one of the teams that we have been waiting for a rematch. It ought to be a real barn burner.  We're on a roll boys---let's rock em sock em!!

Mite AA ties Glenview

The Barrington Redwings Mite AA teams game is Defense and Toughness.  It really doesn't really matter who the goalie is,  the defensive core of and Crossin, Wood, Jackson and Hutson always answer the horn by having great games........ every game. The Redwings tied the Glenview Stars 2-2 on Sunday morning.  The defensive foursome stymied the Stars offensive opportunities as Tommy Shore worked his first game as goalie and made several nice saves for the tie.  Robert Schmitt opened the scoring with a smooth little shot on the doorstep for the 1-0 lead.  Lane Hutson made another beautiful rush end to end that was topped off by a wrister that landed in the upper right hand corner of the net for the 2-1 lead.  A dribbler tied it for the Stars.   A very scrappy game today, lead by the defense on both sides of the puck.    Three tough games coming up.....Go Redwings!!

Three Great games by the Mite AA Redwings

After a long winters nap, the Redwings AA Mite hockey team, with a nice 3 and 0 record, got back to work with three games in four days the weekend of Jan 7-9.  On Friday, a tough game against the Rolling Meadows Chargers ended up in defeat by the score of 2-1.  The Chargers and Redwings fought out a pretty even battle but some good goaltending by the Chargers kept our team scoreless until the end of the third period when Robert Schmitt scored with less than a minute left.  Way to go Robert!!  Shutout DENIED!!  The Redwings  Isac Martins had another amazing game in goal with several outstanding saves.  The game was defensively tough the entire game.

In game two, Sunday morning resulted in a loss to the Northbrook Bluehawks.     Excellent Goaltending by Calvin Speith  was highlighted by  several nice saves  that kept the game close.  A game tying goal  by Isac Martins was a nice little jam shot just inside the left side pipe.   . Another very evenly matched game with the Bluehawks  eventually scoring three quick goals in the midway through the second period.  The boys never gave up though, the third period was played with a lot of guts as they tried to get back in it.  Outstanding Defense by the entire team with some really good back checking.  Despite the loss, the team is looking forward to the upcoming rematch games against both the Chargers on January 18th and an end of the season grudge match against the Bluehawks on February 4.

Monday Night Hockey!  Speaking of rematches, the Redwings rematch game against the Ice Dogs ended up as a nice little 3-2 victory.  The Mite AA teams scoring started out with a great rush down the ice by Lane Hutson that resulted in a perfect shot right into the upper right corner of the net.  Awesome shot!  After the Ice Dogs tied the game, the Wings Center Robert Schmitt scores a goal from right out in front of the Goalie. Roberts shot was a perfect one that slid right into the lower left corner.  Later in the third, Lane duplicated the rush down the ice, the shot was a total deke out of the Goalie for the 3-1 lead. Kameron Wood was very good in goal.  His first save of the game was off his facemask!!  Now that's tough!   The final score was 3-2 Redwings.  Nice Job boys......Go Redwings!!

With a record of 4-2, the Redwings occupy third place in the standings.  Several games coming up, starting with the Glenview team this coming Sunday Jan15.  Good Luck Redwings!!
